AS1.1: In-class activity to come up with a research project (2%)
RationaleThis assignment is an in-class assignment designed to give you a chance to decide on a research project together.

Assessment:  This assignment is worth 2% of your grade and is based on your participation.  At the end of class, submit your Team Worksheets to receive full credit.

PART I: Small Team Discussion to come up with 2 research ideas (40 mins)
  1. Begin by breaking up into "teams" of 4-5 students.  Depending on the number of students in the class, you may have 5-6 teams.
  2. Introduce yourselves.
  3. Begin discussing what topics you would be interested in investigating for the term.  Keep in mind that this project will require you to conduct interviews so consider this as you decide on your project.
  4. As you discuss each project, fill in the Team Proposal Worksheet by answering the following questions for each research idea.
    • WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW?  (Substantive Problem or Issue)
      • What larger issues or concerns first drew you to this problem? Start with a question.  (originating question/specifying question)
      • Why should anyone care what you find?
      • What difference does it make, theoretically or practically?
    • WHAT DO YOU THINK THE ANSWER IS? (Working hypotheses)
      • What is your tentative answer?
      • Be sure to spell out the reasoning behind your working hypotheses and the logical interconnections between them.
PART II: Full Class Discussion (35 mins)
  1. Come back together as a class and finalize the choice of topic.
  2. Take notes on this discussion using the Research Proposal Worksheet.  You will need this worksheet to complete Assignment 1.2!
